A local business, run plainly
Jakob & Sons Dumpster Rental Flint is owned and run by Jakob Voss, built to bring straightforward, dependable dumpster service to Flint homeowners and contractors. Too many companies make you chase a quote, guess at a size, and hope a truck shows up when it said it would. We set out to run the kind of outfit we'd want to call ourselves — a team that actually answers the phone and follows through on what it promises.
That's still the whole mission: to make waste removal easier, cleaner and more straightforward for everyone in Flint. Upfront pricing, responsible disposal, and staying involved in the community we live and work in — that isn't marketing language here, it's how the company actually runs day to day.
Flint is the birthplace of General Motors — Vehicle City itself, where Josiah Dallas Dort, the same Dort whose name is on our own street, helped launch the Durant-Dort Carriage Co., a direct GM predecessor, out of the original Factory One plant. That hardworking, built-to-last heritage is baked into how we think about our own fleet — trucks and containers built to handle a Michigan winter and a full week of hard use. It's also a city in the middle of real, active revitalization: the Genesee County Land Bank Authority has cleared well over 1,600 blighted structures across Flint and the county as part of a $57 million demolition and lot-clearing effort that's still running, and older neighborhoods like Carriage Town are seeing genuine renovation and infill activity. Our drivers see both sides of that work up close — a blight-removal demolition site one week, a historic-home renovation the next.
What we look like today
We own and manage our own dumpster fleet, handle scheduling and logistics in-house, and our own drivers deliver every container we set down. Our yard on 3301 S Dort Hwy coordinates deliveries across Flint and the communities spreading out across Genesee County — from Burton and City of Grand Blanc out to Davison Charter Township and Flushing.
Our team knows this area — the older, narrower streets in neighborhoods like Carriage Town where a container has to sit with extra care, the difference between the City of Grand Blanc and Grand Blanc Charter Township next door, and how a Michigan freeze-thaw cycle changes what a driveway can handle from one month to the next. We know a container placed wrong on a tight city lot can mean a blocked sidewalk, and we know exactly what a hard freeze does to a delivery schedule by the time spring thaw comes around.
Our promise, in one line: the flat rate we quote on the phone is the rate on the invoice, and if we ever get that wrong, we make it right — not you.
Why we care about where it ends up
Hauling debris for a living gives you a fairly direct relationship with the consequences. We live here. So we treat Michigan's waste rules as more than paperwork — we sort out clean wood, metal, cardboard, concrete and yard debris where the volume justifies it, and we'd rather spend five minutes on the phone telling you where an old appliance should go than quietly let it become someone else's problem.
If you want the detail on that, Michigan EGLE publishes guidance on solid waste and construction & demolition disposal statewide, and the Genesee County Metropolitan Planning Commission handles the county-level side of it as the designated solid-waste planning agency. Our own plain-English version is in this guide.
Flint climate and geography, handled
Michigan winters bring real freeze-thaw swings, snow and ice that our drivers plan around rather than treat as an exception — a driveway that's solid in October can heave or soften by February, and we adjust placement and boards accordingly. That's a practical, everyday consideration from roughly November through March. On the geography side, the Flint River runs right through downtown — the subject of an active Flint Riverfront Restoration Project backed by Genesee County Parks and the Mott Foundation — and while that's mostly relevant as scenery and parkland rather than anything that touches our work, it's part of what makes the city center feel different from the surrounding townships.
The rest of the year, Genesee County's ongoing blight-removal and lot-clearing program and steady renovation work in older neighborhoods keeps a steady stream of demolition and cleanout debris on our schedule alongside the usual home cleanouts and remodels.

Our team
The people who answer the phone
Every call we take is handled by our own small team — not a rotating cast from a call center somewhere else. Here's exactly who you're talking to when you call Jakob & Sons.

Jakob Voss
Owner & FounderJakob built Jakob & Sons around a straightforward idea: run a dumpster company the way he'd want to be treated as a customer — one flat rate, a driver who actually knows the address, and a phone that gets answered by someone who can do something about the problem. He still expects to be the person you can reach directly if something goes sideways, and he's usually somewhere between the yard on 3301 S Dort Hwy and a customer's driveway on any given day.

Ryan Voss
Lead DriverRyan is the second Voss on the team, and the one behind the wheel more than anyone else — from tight lots in Carriage Town to new-build driveways out past Swartz Creek. He knows which streets need a careful approach before he ever gets the call.

Renee Castellanos
Office ManagerRenee keeps the daily schedule, the fleet and the yard on 3301 S Dort Hwy running the way Flint customers expect — a truck where it's supposed to be, when it's supposed to be there, whatever the Michigan weather is doing that week.

Deborah Michalski
Customer Care ManagerDeborah is usually the first voice you hear when you call, and the one who follows up after your rental to make sure the pickup went the way you expected.

Natalie Brennan
Dispatch CoordinatorNatalie keeps the trucks moving in the right order — matching drivers to jobs, running swap-out schedules for contractors, and making sure a same-day call before noon actually gets a container on the ground that afternoon.

What you can expect on delivery day
- A call or text ahead from your driver so you're not waiting around all day.
- Boards laid under the rails before the container touches your surface.
- Placement confirmed with you before it's set down, not after.
- A quick, honest rundown of what can and can't go in.
- The site left clean on pickup — we sweep up what falls.
Reviews
What customers tell us
I almost booked a 30 yard for a kitchen gut in Grand Blanc. Whoever answered the phone at Jakob & Sons talked me down to a 15 and was dead right — I never came close to filling it.
Priya N.City of Grand Blanc — Kitchen Remodel
After a heavy ice storm dropped limbs across our fence line out in Genesee Township, Jakob & Sons had a 20 yard on the ground the next morning while half the road was still waiting on a chainsaw crew. Their driver clearly knew the back roads on our side of the county — no wrong turns, no wasted time.
Todd B.Genesee Charter Township — Winter Storm Cleanup
We used Jakob & Sons for a whole subdivision build out in Grand Blanc Township and never once missed a scheduled swap. Same driver most weeks, which meant I didn't have to re-explain the site every time he pulled in. Flat rate held the whole way through.
Renata V.Grand Blanc Charter Township — New Construction

Answers
About Jakob & Sons — common questions
Is Jakob & Sons actually based in Flint?
Yes. Our yard and office are at 3301 S Dort Hwy, Flint, MI 48507, and that's where our dispatch runs day to day. We're not an out-of-state call center — when you call (810) 275-1545 you reach our own Flint team.
How long have you been in business?
We don't lead with a specific founding date because what matters more is how we operate today: a family-run, locally owned Flint business — literally Jakob & Sons — with a small team that answers the phone and gets a container on your driveway when we say we will. Ask us about our track record with a specific job type and we'll give you a straight answer.
Are your drivers licensed and insured?
Our fleet and drivers are fully licensed and insured to operate in Michigan. We're happy to provide a certificate of insurance for general contractors and property managers before a job starts — just ask when you call. It's a routine request for us, and we can usually turn it around the same day so it doesn't hold up your project schedule.
Do you work with contractors on ongoing jobs?
Constantly. Remodelers, roofers, property managers and builders working Genesee County's active blight-removal and lot-clearing efforts alongside Flint's new-construction and infill projects make up a large share of our week. We can set up standing swap-out arrangements with a consistent driver, priority call windows during winter weather stretches, and consolidated monthly invoicing. Call and ask for the commercial side, and we'll build a schedule that fits how your crews actually work.
What happens to the material after pickup?
Our driver weighs it, then sorts where the load makes sorting worthwhile — clean wood, scrap metal, cardboard, clean concrete and yard debris get diverted rather than landfilled. Everything else goes to a permitted disposal facility. Materials restricted from ordinary Michigan landfill disposal are separated out and routed to the right facility, per Michigan EGLE (Dept. of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy) and Genesee County Metropolitan Planning Commission -- Solid Waste rules.
